As one of the first roofing and sheet metal factories to start up in PNG, Barlow has been in business for 40 years. With offices in Rabaul, Lae and Moresby, Barlow Industries has steadily grown and employs about 300 people as of July 2015.
Barlow acknowledges the rapid economic growth of PNG in the past decade and the country’s move towards quality products rather than cheap imports. All Barlow Industries steel comes with a mill certificate authenticating its quality and local production. It is certified to Australian and New Zealand standards to meet the needs of PNG’s modern building requirements. In Port Moresby, Barlow Industries has a group of highly skilled tradespeople supplying stainless steel products such as benches and pipe work for the hotel and fast food industries throughout PNG.
Priding itself on meeting the demands of customers, Barlow Industries holds a great deal of stock to ensure timely, meaningful support for all project types. It has invested in new machinery and workspace to accommodate work in the roll-forming sector, such as panel rib and corrugated iron. There is excellent undercover storage and sophisticated product handling equipment. There is also a committed sales and marketing team to service customers on time and a fleet of reliable vehicles to ensure rapid deliveries. Qualified technicians and a separate maintenance engineering section complete the customer service package.
Some recent projects include fabricating and supplying materials for:
- Unggai Bena District way bridge
- Kundiawa Market project
- Lae Polytech Building
- PNG Games booths
- New classrooms at St Joseph’s School in PNG
- Fencing for Nadzab Airport, Lae, through Plumtrade
Whilst Barlow specialises in steel fabrication, the sales and supply of merchant steel are made through its sister company Niugini Steel. Together, they provide homeowners, builders and major contractors with all of their steel needs from fabrication right through to roofing and guttering installation. Both Barlow Industries and NSC have merchant steel supplies in stock now.
Barlow Industries is proud of its contribution to creating local employment opportunities. In Rabaul, Barlow takes in students on a three-month training program from the local vocational schools such as Raval and Woolnough. These students are imparted skills in sheet metal fabrication, welding, tank making and more. The students are paid a stipend of K150.00 a fortnight to cover their transport and lunch costs, which is above and beyond Barlow’s obligations. On average, 25 students are trained per year. Some are absorbed into the regular workforce.
Barlow also offers special discounted pricing for schools and churches to help them manage with their limited building and repair funds.
Barlow is part of the PICSA PNG Group, which is in turn part of the COMCRAFT Group, a multi-national company represented in Australia, Singapore, Africa, Papua New Guinea, and beyond.
Barlow Industries expects continued growth in the future, with a focus on quality products, excellent service, and lasting relationships in the growing PNG construction industry.
